Santa has made his list and is checking it twice, which gives you time to ensure you’re checking your lists and shopping safely. To help, The Innovative Payments Association and InComm Payments teamed up to create shoppingsafely.org, which provides tips for avoiding online fraud and scams while shopping online.

“Everyone should be aware online shopping opens doors for cybercriminals, but it shouldn't deter you from enjoying the convenience,” said IPA President and CEO Brian Tate. “With just a few simple steps, you can safeguard your online purchases and keep your information secure, even after the holidays.” 

According to the FBI, online fraud complaints increased by nearly 30% in 2022, with reported losses exceeding $6 billion, making it important for consumers to protect themselves against scams and online fraud. For example, some tips for shopping online include:

• Shop on reputable sites: Check the Better Business Bureau or search online for reviews before making a purchase.
• Look for HTTPS: A secure checkout page will display "https" in the address bar.
• Create unique logins: Avoid using the same username and password for multiple online accounts.
• Consider guest checkout: If you're a one-time shopper, use guest checkout to avoid storing your card information.
• Stay alert: Be wary of unsolicited emails and offers, and never click on suspicious links or attachments.
