In 2006, the results of the IPA Proofing RoundUP were groundbreaking, in that it demonstrated for the first time vendors were able to produce proofs within industry tolerances for visual match using only color management numerical techniques.

In 2007, vendors and users had little difficulty in achieving a very close match to the reference file in a laboratory setting. But in 2009, anecdotal reports from users indicate that the actual practice of proofing is still far from these potential results.

For this reason, the IPA Proofing RoundUP returns as part of the 2009 IPA Technical Conference to explore the actual state of proofing in everyday business.

    PROOFING ROUNDUP TESTS

    • Hard & Soft proofing test procedures
    • Application Data Sheet clarity
    • Matching SWOP/GRACoL
    • Grey Balance
    • Step-wedge
    • Optical brighteners
    • Multicolor proofing N-color profiles
    • Spot colours (Pantone/Pantone GOE™)
    • Monitor proofing
    • "Normal” marketplace results
    • Full gamut and optimized proofs

The 2009 Proofing RoundUP tests will examine hard and soft copy proofing solutions intended to verify and confirm the results from the 2007 Proofing RoundUP. Additional tests will determine if a proof matches the printing condition of GRACoL #1 and the tolerances of the IDEAlliance ISO 12647-7 control strip.

Remote proofing capabilities and accuracy will also be tested. The much discussed influence of optical brighteners for a proof to press sheet will be evaluated for the ability to compensate for the influence of optical brighteners using various profiling and measurement techniques.

As the packaging market uses more than 4-color process printing to achieve its desired results, the proofing capabilities of multicolor inkjet proofers to reproduce special colors from the Pantone GOE™ system will be tested.

The validity and accuracy of the ADS for both hard and soft proofing will be a central part of the 2009 RoundUP. Specific challenges faced by the softcopy solution providers will be demonstrated during the IPA technical conference.

A marketplace study will also take place to see the actual state of proofing quality in the industry.

    JDF ROUNDUP

The JDF RoundUP will include an examination of the MIS to Prepress, ICS and MIS to Conventional Press ICS, and the LayCrimp test. These tests will help identify the strengths and opportunities for improvement and implementation of various JDF enabled solutions.
