Systems Announced For IPA/IDEAlliance Ink Optimization Roundup

Leading manufacturers putting their ink optimization software to the test

April 1, 2010 —UPDATED APRIL 12, 2010— IPA/IDEAlliance announced today the systems to be examined as part of the 2010 Ink Optimization RoundUP, an exhaustive evaluation of ink-saving technologies. In the Ink Optimization RoundUP, participating systems are put through a series of tests designed to assess their capabilities, as well as educate printers and print buyers on the use, benefits and pitfalls of ink optimization software.

Joe Fazzi, Vice President Print Media at IDEAlliance stated, “Ink Optimization technology is a great tool for both printers and print buyers to use for continued improvement in producing quality products, being as “green as possible,” and keeping an eye on the bottom line. IPA/IDEAlliance is committed to providing forums that bring these technologies to the forefront for the industry.”

Systems to be examined include:

  • Agfa :Apogee InkSave
  • Alwan CMYK Optimizer ECO
  • Beijing Founder EcoInk
  • CGS ORIS INK SAVER
  • FineEye ICEserver
  • GMG InkOptimizer
  • Kodak ColorFlow
  • OneVision PlugINKSAVEin
  • ppi Media InkReduction
  • TGLC PerfX Pro and PerfX DeviceLink Pro
  • MPX360 Colorserver

The study, led by Dr. Abhay Sharma, Ryerson University, and Ben Starr, will compare participating systems in terms of total ink reduction, color change, stability on press, file integrity and the individual features of each solution. Ink optimization results will be tested on press using Sappi’s McCoy paper on a state-of-the-art 28”x40”, 8-color ROLAND 700 offset press.

The results of the tests will provide an invaluable resource for prospective buyers of ink optimization solutions. Test results will be published in a detailed book, complete with printed samples submitted from each solution, and announced at the IPA/IDEAlliance Technical Conference in Rosemont Illinois, June 7-8, 2010. About Ink Optimization Software
Ink optimization software works by reducing the amount of CMY inks required to produce a color, replacing them with black ink. This can result in lower printing costs and better handling on press, but can also potentially cause color change and loss of detail in images. This RoundUP evaluates a number of available solutions for ink optimization from different manufacturers, and will help users determine if ink optimization software is right for them and which of the many offerings best fits their needs.
