Tuesday, April 22

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM

  • Technology Track: Pulp Fiction: Inks and Substrates in Color Reproduction
Moderator: Trish Wales, Partner, Roloc color

Color management has made great progress in recent years in our ability to predict and proof color for standard uses in commercial printing and publications. It has also shown clearly that difference in paper and ink have a great impact on color reproduction on press. Paper industry expert Trish Wales reviews factors that affect color reproduction and explores new ways to define and group papers based on their color reproduction properties. It's much more than the hues of the stock and inks, it's critical information to consider when building profiles or making paper selections.

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM

  • Technology Track: Tools of the Trade: Instrumentation and Visual Control
Moderator: Mike Eddington, QA Manager/Gracol G7 Certified Expert, North American Color

Get the right tool for the job. Depending on your needs and role in the workflow, your job may require a $100 instrument or a scanning spectrophotometer costing thousands of dollars. In this session we'll review the wide array of choices for instrumentation, including densitometers, spectrophotometers, colorimeters, plate readers, and integrated solutions like the HP Zseries printers, along with a description of their intended use. Real world examples will be given on best measurement practices, including the use of UV filtration, how to gauge inter-instrument agreement and verifying instrument performance to fulfill requirements of quality managements systems, such as ISO 9000. Critical issues around measuring and viewing color in the creative and premedia workflow will be highlighted in ways to make collaboration and technology work for you.

The term "digital asset management" (DAM) refers to a business strategy of managing image, video and other media assets. It requires solutions designed specifically to streamline the acquisition, storage and retrieval of digital media. For those of us who employ a DAM system, we believe in it's ability to reduce the time and cost of content production, maximize the return on investment from media assets, bring new products and services for our clients to market faster. What's next? What new tools do we have available to help bring creatives closer to the DAM process? How have we enabled our teams, internally and externally, to work more effectively? This session will explain how to align your clients with your marketing activities.
