The PDF/X family of standards (ISO15930-1a,2,3) form the basis of a reliable, print ready format for exchange between various enterprises in the graphic arts industry. This series elaborates on the use of PDF/X and "color management," specifically illustrating how they should be used in conjunction with established specifications such as SWOP. Presenter: Mike Rodriquez
This first program reviews the background and basics of PDF/X, the various conformance levels (PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-2, PDF/X-3) and their distinctions with respect to color management. The basics of traditional and modern color management will be reviewed including demonstrating the "Output Intents" feature of PDF/X extends this framework in support of graphic arts and reference print conditions.
This second program in this curriculum will focus on CMYK and spot color workflows supported by PDF/X-1a. This will include color managed proofing using the "Output Intent" profile and explaining the important role played by characterized print conditions such as SWOP. Application support for PDF/X-1a color management and file verification will also be reviewed.
This third program in this curriculum elaborates on more advanced device-independent color managed workflows enabled by PDF/X-3. Operations such as color conversion, proofing and repurposing will be illustrated. Application support for PDF/X-3 color management and file verifications will be reviewed.
